Evidence-based Health Care - Using Scientific Evidence in Your Practice
Dentists, nurses, physicians, and other health professionals have a wealth of published scientific evidence available that
can be used to help make day-to-day clinical decisions. This class will cover how to more effectively find and evaluate
information relevant to clinical cases using such sources as Medline, clinical practice guidelines and the Cochrane
Library, a database of systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials.
Using the Cochrane Systematic Reviews to Improve Patient Care
Learn to use the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, which contains articles synthesizing the best randomized
controlled trials on more than 600 topics.
Finding Health and Vital Statistics
Learn traditional resources and major Internet sites and strategies for finding health-related statistics. Areas
include notifiable diseases, vital and health statistics, BioMedSearch and Internet resources.
Nursing Information Databases
Learn how to uncover literature and resources provided for clinical nursing and research. This class will look at the nursing aspects of MEDLINE, the unique properties of the nursing database CINAHL, and a variety of Internet resources including the Virginia Henderson databases.
Biomedical Grant Information on the Internet
Discover
how to find biomedical grants and contracts (e.g. NIH) on the Internet.
What's News: Keeping Up with the Latest in Health Sciences Literature
Learn how to tap the most current resources for the latest information in the health sciences. Topics will
include searching methodology, desktop delivery of table of contents and abstrasts, and hot sites on the
Internet.
Searching Medline via PubMed
The US government provides free access to Medline. Learn to search Medline through the National
Library of Medicine's Web site via PubMed. Learn about special features and search options available
through PubMed.
Electronic Publications on the Internet - Hands-on
Explore electronic publications available through the Internet. We will look at University of Minnesota Libraries
subscriptions, links through BioMedSearch, Emory University's MedWeb, and more.
