Learning modules   --   Smoking cessation/prevention

The goal of the learning modules is to help you develop skills for practicing evidence-based health care. With a real-life scenario, each module demonstrates how to formulate a well-balanced question, how to search the databases, how to critically appraise the data, and how to apply the obtained information to the real-life problem.

Searching Tools introduces the basic tools in the BioMedSearch system of the Bio-Medical Library, University of Minnesota. BioMedSearch uses the same structure and format for different databases. Searching Tools demonstrates how to do keyword, author, and journal searches, how to narrow and limit your search, and how to combine and cross search in different fields.

Module 1 demonstrates the strategies for searching ACP Best Evidence; module 2 demonstrates MEDLINE; module 3 demonstrates CINAHL; module 4 demonstrates COCHRANE Database of Systematic Reviews; and module 5 demonstrates the strategies for searching both MEDLINE and COCHRANE Database of Systemic Reviews. For information on other databases and hand-on exercises on database searching, contact the BioMedical Library.
